Following a meeting of local members on Tuesday evening, Hertford & Stortford Liberal Democrats have unveiled 22 year old Andrew Lewin as their Parliamentary candidate for the next General Election.
Commenting shortly after the announcement, Mr Lewin said, "I am honoured to have been given this opportunity and am looking forward to engaging with voters from across the constituency between now and the General Election. I sense that that there is a real desire for change in our area and I will be campaigning to prove that only the Liberal Democrats have the fresh ideas to make our community fairer, greener and safer".
Mr Lewin will be fighting to oust incumbent Conservative MP, Mark Prisk. Prisk has been the MP for Hertford and Stortford since 2001, but has recently been asked to make repayments of £7,000 after being implicated in the Parliamentary expenses scandal. Mr Lewin added, "I share the public's anger over the expenses episode, it is essential that candidates tackle this issue openly and offer solutions that can rebuild trust in the system. If I were elected as your Liberal Democrat MP, I can confirm that I would not seek a second home in London. I would commute into Westminster alongside the thousands of people that do on a daily basis".
Born and raised in Hertfordshire, Mr Lewin is a former student at the Bishop's Stortford High School and playing member at Bishop's Stortford Cricket Club. He also stood as the Lib Dem candidate in Bishop's Stortford Central in a February town council by-election. He added, "I am standing for Parliament because I want to be a local champion for the people of Hertford and Stortford. I know that there are a diverse range of issues facing our community, but my immediate focus will be on the economy, education and the environment. I will be outlining more details on these policy areas in the weeks and months to come, but in the meantime, I am happy for people to contact me with questions at: andrewlewin7@gmail.com"
Andrew Lewin's selection was welcomed by Mike Wood, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on East Herts District council. Mr Wood said, "I look forward to working with Andrew in the run up to the next election. He will no doubt appeal in particular to the younger voters".
