FROM HERTFORD AND STORTFORD LIBERAL DEMOCRATS
Friday 25th September
LOCAL CAMPAIGNER MAKES MAIDEN SPEECH ON NATIONAL POLITICAL STAGE.
A former Bishop's Stortford town council candidate this week made a foray into the national political scene. Liberal Democrat campaigner Andrew Lewin, (22) addressed the Liberal Democrat Conference in Bournemouth during a policy debate on globalisation.
The speech broadcast live on BBC Parliament, focused on the party's immigration policy, with Mr Lewin speaking in favour of an amendment to existing policy. Lewin praised the Liberal Democrat's stance on immigration, saying that, "he was proud that the Liberal Democrats are the only party that understand the cultural and economic value of immigration".
The policy change that was supported by Mr Lewin and subsequently passed by the conference hall endorsed a regional points system for economic migrants. Under the Liberal Democrat plan, more points would be awarded to immigrants who are willing to move to areas of the UK where there is a skills shortage. The rationale is to help manage immigration policy so that economic migrants are encouraged to move to areas where their skills are in highest demand.
Commenting after his speech, Andrew Lewin said:
"I am delighted that the Liberal Democrats continue to lead the debate on this vital issue. A regional points based system will shape an immigration policy that benefits local communities and the country alike"
"It was an honour to speak at the party conference for the first time; I hope that it is the first of many".
